On another day Stones would have been happy with an away point and a clean sheet, but this was a game that Stones should have wrapped up in the first fifteen minutes.

Butler, Ryan and Jolly all had early chances, the best, a Butler header that cannoned off the cross bar, but Stones couldn’t force the ball home.

From then on, although Stones had the greater possession, the game was quite even, Alexander feeding Jolly and Williams also seeing an effort just wide, while at the other end Carter did well to save from Frempong in a one on one.

The second half followed a similar pattern but for some reason at a slower pace, neither side really getting out of the blocks second half, but again Stones failed to breakthrough. Jolly had a penalty saved on 65 minutes when Hemmerdinger was fouled and it was Jolly again whose goal was disallowed for offside from another player, but there was little else positive about the Stones going forward.

Berkhamsted sensed a win in the last few minutes and an excellent challenge from Morgan quelled one attack, while a Carter save and a Courtnage last gasp block also prevented the home side from stealing the points.

Stones hold the ground but can’t get goals

AN unsatisfactory afternoon for Wealdstone, as despite territorial superiority for long periods, they were unable to turn it into goals, resulting in a frustrating stalemate.

As early as the first minute a sweeping move down the right led to a cross and a far post header that Martin Carter made a complete hash of.

Andy Carter made a good save to keep out Porter’s shot soon after, but for the next half hour it was only Wealdstone who were going to score. Danny Butler’s header hit the bar, Ben Alexander’s hooked shot hit Fattorusso on the line, and a string of corners followed in succession.

But there was no deserved breakthrough, and as half time approached the game became more of an even, yet chanceless contest until Brett Freeman’s back pass wrong-footed Carter and the defender had to race back to clear off of the line to stop the own goal.

The second half started as the first had finished, but the introduction of Marvin Morgan for Dave Ryan after 55 minutes for a while livened things up considerably.

Alas, despite several surges into the box by Wealdstone forwards, of which there were now three, the final pass was always disappointing, resulting in missed opportunities.

Even when Hall pulled back Alon Hemmerdinger to concede a penalty, Richard Jolly’s shot lacked the power and conviction to beat former Stones trialist Cenolli in the Berkhamsted goal.

Ten minutes later Jolly did find the net but the score was ruled out by controversial referee Atkin for Hemmerdinger being in an offside, yet wide, position.

The final 15 minutes passed quietly, but in stoppage time Berko finally produced another shot worthy of the name and Carter had to save at full stretch to keep out Porter’s cross shot.
