Stones back in promotion hunt after Braintree are finally beaten
AFTER suffering a setback at Barking on Saturday and appearing to jeopardise their promotion hopes, Wealdstone pulled off the result of the season at Braintree on Tuesday to put themselves right back in the promotion frame.
The Essex side had gone 35 games since the start of the season unbeaten and had gained promotion on Saturday before Dennis Green’s 22nd-minute goal ended their impressive run.
A large crowd of 576 was there to see Wealdstone score a route-one goal which in the end decided an entertaining game.
Noel Imber’s huge clearance found Brian Jones who put over an excellent cross which was fired home by Greene.
Simon Garner hit the post seven minutes later but Stones Fans’ hearts were in their mouths as Imber, just back from a loan spell with Harrow Borough, pulled off a brilliant save in the 74th minute to tip Bishop’s header onto the bar.
The win puts Stones four points clear of their nearest rivals for the final promotion spot to Division One, Bedford Town.
