St. Albans City 1 – 0 Wealdstone

The game got off to a fast start, and both sides looked to gain control of the game in the early stages. Leo Sery fired a powerful shot from a tight angle on the left of the box, testing the keeper early. As the players settled into the tie, it was the Stones who looked most threatening. They created several chances in the opening 25 minutes to keep Magnus Norman’s hands warm. Their most notable effort was a good move by Max Kretzschmar to get in behind our back line and challenge the keeper in a one-on-one that resulted in a display of fantastic reflexes from the goalie.

The Saints remained solid defensively, keeping the score level and creating a platform to forge opportunities of their own. At the half-hour mark, we came close again, this time with a fast counterattack following a cleared corner that allowed us to drill a low cross into the six-yard box, which flew past everyone and was eventually defended away for a City corner.

As the break approached, it was Wealdstone who would create the final chance of the half when a great piece of skill from Sean Adarkwa allowed him to fire at the keeper from a tight angle on the left of the box. This was claimed well by Norman, who capped off a very solid display in net during the first half. After a well-contested 45 minutes, both sides went down the tunnel with nothing between them.

At the beginning of the second half, we were out of the blocks fast, a fabulous long ball over the top from the substitute centre half Kieran Gauthier found Sery on the right-hand side. He quickly squared a low driven ball into the path of Jasper Mather, whose off-balanced effort couldn’t convert the attempt into a goal.

The next 30 minutes were cagey, with both sides creating chances but no clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock. During this period of the game, a flurry of substitutions saw City reshuffle, sharing the minutes among the squad in preparation for the season and giving Wealdstone a fresh challenge to face.

The next big chance of the game was for the Saints in the 80th minute, where a free-kick was swung in by Troy Perez-Duah, leading to a scramble in the six-yard box that could have gone either way but was eventually cleared to safety by a Wealdstone defender. Sensing the opportunity to gain an advantage in the game, we upped the intensity and put the Wealdstone defence under increased pressure in the last 10 minutes.

With both sides pushing for a result, it was the Saints who came out on top, seizing the opportunity to score. A quick break was distributed to the right wing deep in the Stones’ half. The ball was moved inside to Tom Jennings, who was able to shift the ball onto his right foot and, in turn, beat his opposite man, giving him a one-on-one with the keeper. He powerfully blasted the ball into the far corner of the net, giving the Saints the lead late in the game. After seeing out a corner in the last nervous minutes of the tie to seal the win, we extended our preseason winning streak to 4 on the bounce. The Saints showed brilliant defensive resilience throughout the game, but particularly in the early stages. From there, a combination of expansive play and clinical finishing earned us a hard-fought win over a tough opponent.
