RESURGENT IRON UNLUCKY AT WEALDSTONE

Braintree rue missed chances

Iron journeyed around the M25 on Saturday to visit play-off hopefuls Wealdstone and were beaten by a late goal, despite having been the better of the two sides.

Marley Miranda saw his sixth minute header blocked by the home defence and Terrell Works saw his 26th minute effort scrambled away. Regan Clayton tried his luck on the half hour, 25 yards out from a free kick, but home keeper Dante Baptiste saved well. On 33 minutes Chay Cooper was provider for Works but his shot missed the target. Works turned provider for Cooper four minutes later, but his effort was deflected to the Baptiste as Braintree looked the more positive of the two sides.

Wealdstone had a couple of good chances after the re-start. Obeiro saw his effort blocked by Frankie Terry on 50 minutes and McAvoy’s attempt was well saved by Thompson four minutes later. The home side rattled the crossbar midway through the second half through Nathan Tshikuna and Fletcher Hubbard just missed the target on 82 minutes.

Moments later, arguably against the run of play, the home side took the lead through Daniel Nkrumah who was released by Dylan Kadji and slotted the ball past Thompson.

Late on John Akinde’s header was pushed onto the bar by Baptiste and the home keeper did well to push Sahid Kamara’s effort over in time added on. But despite the chances, the defeat saw Braintree drop to 22nd.
