Worth the visit

Wealdstone must like the sea air at Worthing, having won for the third time in four years.

A far better performance all round than last Saturday when they squandered a 2-0 lead, tonight, they battled their way into the game, Worthing just having the better of the first half, Stones dominating the second for long periods.

A shaky start saw a penalty appeal turned down for Worthing after 1 minute, but Stones soon settled and coped confidently with Worthing’s attack, Andy carter marshalling his defence well and saving when called to, but it was Stones who had possibly the best chances, Jason Shaw unlucky from 20 yards, and Dennis Greene seeing a header just pass the post shortly before the break.

As the half ended Worthing were the brighter side, and Andy carter saved well in a 1 on 1 with Carrington to preserve the half time stalemate.

The second half started with stones playing more football, and starting to cause more problems for the home defence, Shaw found Hammatt on the back post and his snap shot was just wide on 47 minutes and then on 65 McDonnagh saw a shot from 25 yards beat everyone before hitting the bar and dropping for the defender to clear.

On 70 minutes Hammatt again was unlucky as a looping header beat the home ‘keeper but was scooped off the line again to safety, before substitute Pither chased down the home goalkeeper winning the ball, squared to McDonnagh who saw his shot from twenty yards headed off the line with the goalkeeper still trying to regain his ground.

On 76 minutes a shot from Shaw was palmed away, Pither again collected the ball wide on the left and cut it back to tucker, his low drive into the box found Tilbury who scored from three yards to give Stones the lead.

On 84 minutes Stones pressure won another corner and McDonnagh’s delivery found Greene on the edge of the six yard box, his glancing header making the game safe but there was still more to come as in the 88th minute Greene had a shot from 20 yards, again striking the post and running to safety.

Wealdstone then continued their good run at Worthing that has seen a draw and three wins in four visits.
