Wealdstone produced an impressive performance in difficult conditions to defeat Aldershot Town by a single goal at the EBB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

It was a meeting of sorcerer and apprentice, with the host’s manager Scott Davies having played under former Shots’ boss Gary Waddock when the club tasted promotion to the EFL some 20 years ago.

The Stones created the first chance of the game when Olufela Olomola teed up Ronan Maher on the edge of the box.  Fresh off his spectacular goal in the Emirates FA Cup last weekend, he tried to recreate that moment as he cut inside onto his right foot before bending an effort just wide of the far post.

Aldershot threatened for the first time in the 10th minute as a deep cross into the Wealdstone box picked out an unmarked Brody Peart, who was unable to generate enough power with his header which Stones’ keeper Sam Long gathered comfortably.

The home fans thought they had a penalty in the 20th minute when Basil Tuma went down under pressure in the Wealdstone penalty area, but the referee booked the Aldershot winger for simulation.

Wealdstone quickly went back up the other end and nearly opened the scoring as Luke Norris nodded a Maher cross onto the post before the Shots scrambled to clear the danger.

The Stones continued to keep the pressure on and Norris had two chances to score.  He stung the hands of the goalkeeper with a speculative effort from the edge of the area and should have scored a minute later, but couldn’t convert Olomola’s low cross as he hooked his shot wide of the goal with just the keeper to beat.

HALF-TIME: Aldershot Town 0-0 Wealdstone

The Stones scored the opening goal of the match just one minute into the second half. Jack Wells-Morrison whipped in a corner to the near post for Olomola to score with a simple header. The striker celebrated by running to the half-way line and hugging Gary Waddock.

Aldershot looked for a quick response and Long was forced to punch the ball away for a corner in the 59th minute after a dangerous cross from Tuma. The resulting corner was delivered into the box and found the head of Peart, who couldn’t keep his header on target.

The Stones defended well for the next 20 minutes as both sides struggled to create chances in the stormy conditions.

Maher nearly extended the Wealdstone lead in the 77th minute, weaving left and then right to wrong-foot the defender before shooting into the side-netting.

Olomola also had a chance to pick up his second goal of the contest in the 88th minute after driving into the box from the left wing, but his shot was straight at the goalkeeper.

Waddock’s side stood firm against some late pressure without giving up any clear-cut chances. After they successfully defended a last-minute corner, the referee blew the final whistle to confirm that Wealdstone would leave with all three points.

t was a slow start to the game for both sides, with the weather conditions helping neither side, the first chance of the game came to Wealdstone, who after some superb play in the Shots half had a dangerous cross cut out for a corner.

The Shots first chance of the game went to Anisius Lewis, who after being slipped in behind by Basil Tuma tried to get a shot off, but the ball got tangled between his feet, instead he played back to Connor Lawless who played a superb first-time cross to Brody Peart who’s headed effort was saved by Sam Long.

As per usual the Shots focused most of their attacks towards their wingers, aiming to go around the defense and whip dangerous balls into the box.

After receiving the ball 35-yards out Tuma did great to beat his man and drive into the box, as he entered the penalty area he was taken down by the Wealdstone defenders. To the surprise of everyone in the stadium the referee blew his whistle and booked Tuma for “diving”.

Following the penalty shout the Stones created two great chances. A mistake at the back resulted in Olufela Olomola finding himself through on goal, he drove towards the box free from pressure and played a ball across goal that somehow found its way over to Luke Norris who’s shot found itself just wide of the far post.

HALF TIME – Aldershot Town 0 – 0 Wealdstone

Scott made one change at half-time, with Hakeem Sandah coming on for Marcus Dinanga.

The Stones opened the scoring a minute into the second half. A corner whipped in by Jack Wells-Morrison found its way onto the head of Olomola at the near-post whose simple header gave Wealdstone the lead.

A ball left uncleared by the Wealdstone defenders made its way towards Ollie Harfield, who’s pinpoint cross found Michee Efete in the box, which forced Long into a superb save to deny the Shots an equalizer.

A few minutes later a corner whipped in from Lawless made its way to Brody Peart who’s powerful effort fell just wide of the post.

Approaching the 80th minute Scott made his second change of the day, bringing Marcus Wyllie on for Brody Peart. 5 minutes later Anisius Lewis was replaced by Tristan Abrahams.
