Wealdstone claimed their first home league victory on Saturday afternoon with an emphatic 4-0 triumph over Gateshead.

Gary Waddock made three changes to his starting line-up from last weekend’s narrow defeat to Tamworth, with Luke Norris returning while new signings Ronan Maher and Abraham Kanu made their debuts for the Stones.

Following a low-tempo start, the visitors threatened first as Luke Supyk unleashed a thunderous strike from 25 yards out, but Dante Baptiste made an acrobatic save to tip the ball over the bar.

On the 12-minute mark, Gateshead continued to apply pressure as Jordy Hiwula skipped past Mason Barrett on the left edge of the box and, after a scramble in the area, the Stones somehow kept it out of Baptiste’s net.

The Heed continued on the front foot as Alfie McCalmont pounced on an error from Baptiste, with the rebound falling to Hiwula, whose effort was brilliantly kept out by a diving save from Baptiste to keep the scoreline level.

Against the run of play, Wealdstone found the opener in the 22nd minute through Olufela Olomola, who swivelled in front of goal and smashed the ball past Pete Jameson at his near post to fire the Stones into the lead.

Buoyed by the goal, Jack Wells-Morrison unleashed a powerful strike from distance that soared inches wide of Jameson’s crossbar.

As play neared the 30-minute mark, Olomola orchestrated a looping cross towards the back left post which met Norris’s head, but the striker’s effort was deflected wide of the target by a defender’s head.

Wealdstone’s dominance was rewarded minutes later when Wells-Morrison was clumsily brought down by Alex Lankshear inside Gateshead’s box, with the referee immediately pointing to the spot.

Norris stepped up and calmly dispatched his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner to double the Stones’ advantage.

As half-time loomed, Waddock’s men mounted one last attack when Dylan Kadji surged into Gateshead’s box and slipped a neat pass to Norris, whose strike sailed over the woodwork.

HALF TIME: WEALDSTONE 2 – 0 GATESHEAD

Wealdstone returned from the break in the same attacking vein as new signing Maher delivered an inviting cross to the back post, where Dan Chesters teed up Wells-Morrison to tap home the Stones’ third goal of the afternoon.

In an attempt to fight back, Gateshead’s substitute Freddie Issaka burst forward and unleashed an effort goal-bound, but his strike trickled across the face of goal.

Following a period of little action, the Stones renewed their attacking intent in the 70th minute when Aaron Henry tried his luck from distance, but his effort flew wide.

In the 83rd minute, Wealdstone’s threat was rewarded. Henry’s superb free-kick forced a low save from Jameson. His parry ran kindly into the path of Jack Cook, who fired home to sting Gateshead once more.

Deep into stoppage time, new signing Fejiri Okenabirhie rose to meet a cross into the box, but his header struck the crossbar to confirm a convincing 4-0 for Wealdstone.

Next up, the Stones face a quick turnaround as they travel to Gloucestershire on Tuesday evening to take on Robbie Savage’s Forest Green Rovers in a 7:45 pm kick-off.
